Glen Mills residence

The central gathering area of this Glen Mills home was due for some thoughtful updates to accommodate a young and active family with two school age sons. Working with Lindsay Construction, we were able to plot out a cabinetry plan for an open living space to match their everyday level of busy.

Drawings and Material Palette

With sunny views to a lush yard, the restoration intent was to feature an abundance of daylight while opening the rest of the first floor to the constant activity outdoors. An extension allowed space for a large center island, increased cabinetry heights, ample pantry storage all in a design of clean and orderly simplicity.

Bright white cabinetry, generous crown moldings, butcher block and soapstone countertops, subway tile and slate flooring are each complemented by symmetric accents of light.

The working island is the center of activity. For parties it's the natural place for the buffet. It's the gathering area for breakfast, a grocery sorting station and homework central for this young family.
An integrated microwave is accessible at the boys' height for snacks and popcorn after school. The island's seating area is spaced close enough for homework help while dinner is being prepared.
The cabinetry selection here is an inset shaker style in bright white. Hidden hinges allow the traditional hardware to steal the show as accents. Under cabinet task lighting adds to the overall serenity of the room, accenting countertop tasks while floating the upper cabinets.

Gigantic moldings draw the eye upward and seamlessly tie the new section to the original part of the kitchen. The original exterior stone now becomes a complementary texture.
Alongside the kitchen, a glass display cabinet and additional built-ins serve as the transition between the work area and a sunlit seating space leading to the outdoors.
